In conjunction with Plastic, The New Coal

The banks of the Mississippi River south of Baton Rouge, Louisiana are lined with industrial facilities including many that are producing the petrochemicals needed to create plastic products. Where these petrochemical plants now sit, plantations once operated. Dr. Joy and Jo Banner are founders of the Descendant's Project and residents of the historic freetown of Wallace, Louisiana who are co-visioning the building of a Liberation Labyrinth at their education and cultural district where Plastics, The New Coal is being exhibited. The Banners will host a presentation on the histories, present realities and future dreams for their community and will share insights and understandings around the ongoing permits and plans regarding the giant Formosa plastics facility being planned for South Louisiana and The United Nations Global Plastics Treaty.

Jo Banner and Dr Joy Banner are co-Founders and co-Director of The Descendants Project, a nonprofit foundation committed to the liberation of the Black descendant community through the dismantling of inequitable and discriminatory economic, environmental, and social systems inherent in the violent legacies of slavery.
