apexart High School Program 2021
Rather than reinforce the idea that creativity belongs to career artists alone, the apexart High School Program encourages students to integrate a lifestyle of curiosity and experimentation by identifying strategies and tools they can use to build a creative practice and lifestyle.
Inspired by our artist Fellowship program — which informs and counters art world expectations by inviting artists to not make work for a period of time and instead follow a planned itinerary of activities that takes them to new spaces, places, events and different sources of inspiration and participation with their surroundings — it prompts students to question first impressions, held beliefs and to explore life creatively whether they are pursuing art as a career or not.
We start off by sending a short questionnaire to students. The questions address personal issues of creativity and how they perceive creativity and the art world. During the class, we address ideas of “success” in art and reference students’ questionnaire answers as a part of the discussion. Students will have a chance to brainstorm their own Fellowship activities. Overall, it is meant to be a fun, thought provoking and stimulating class visit.
