Mathias Tusiime (b. 1975, Bushenyi, Uganda) is a self-taught painter and paper maker using stories of political activities as a way to communicate with the towns and villages where he lives. He started painting in 1999 at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art where he developed skills and knowledge working with oils and acrylics in addition to making craft paper. Inspired by culture, nature, and the environment, he works independently and with his community to create artworks using recycled plastics and visits studios of other artists to share and develop new ideas and collaborations. He believes art can change the artist and influence the people in his/her community. Mathias Tusiime currently lives and works in Kampala.
