Join us for an online curator's tour of We Used to Be Seaweed, live from the Savitsky Museum in Nukus, Uzbekistan. This special exhibition brings together contemporary artworks and modernist paintings from the museum's renowned collection to explore the story of the Aral Sea—once the world’s fourth-largest lake, now an ecological symbol of transformation and loss.
The Savitsky Museum, celebrated for its extraordinary collection of Soviet avant-garde and Turkestan modernist art, provides a powerful backdrop for this exploration of resilience, memory, and ecological collapse.
Lilia Bakanova is an interdisciplinary artist based in the UK, drawing on her Russian, Kazakh, and Uzbek heritage. Her work explores decay as transformation, reflecting themes of time, memory and barely seen changes.
