Musita Rubli singing group of the Bangli Jail in Bali has been granted unusual permission to perform for this very special public program. Marking the group's first professional public performance, it will be a landmark event for both the prisoners and prison.
Fashioned from weekly musical gatherings that mirror the Indonesian tradition of coming together for recreational singing, the event features Batak music, a North Sumatran traditional style. The use of rounds and vocal harmonies creates a wave-like islander melody in which the catchy, upbeat tempo is an undeniable a celebration of life and what is possible through the use of the singers’ own bodies. Additional highlights are dangdut (Indonesian traditional songs) and interpretations of local indie music anthems. The Musita Rubli singing group of the Bangli Jail in Bali, Indonesia was formed in 2018, and is comprised of interchangeable prisoners, whether or not they have prior music exposure or training. All share a love for music and the group meets three times a week to practice playing traditional Indonesian folk songs (dangdut) by ear. The choir also enjoys Batak music of the North Sumatran area, and has developed an interest in vocal harmonies. apexart’s program supporters past and present include the National Endowment for the Arts, Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation, the Kettering Family Foundation, the Buhl Foundation, The Martin and Rebecca Eisenberg Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Spencer Brownstone, the Kenneth A.
