Alternative Unknowns began with a meeting between the exhibition's curators, designers, and folks from the New York City Emergency Management, to discuss potentially beneficial intersections between speculative design and emergency management. These discussions shaped the direction of the exhibition, for which participating designers created products to be used during a hypothetical pandemic that spreads through New York City. Now it is time for the discussion group to reconvene, and for emergency preparedness professionals at New York City Emergency Management to consider and evaluate the role of speculative thinking and what has been produced and proposed.
