T. J. McLachlan (b. 1983) was working as an electrician on the Canadian prairies when his art practice and interest in cultural theory began to consume much of his time. Finding a good match with the Critical and Cultural Practices program at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, T.J. and his wife relocated to Canada's west coast to live in Vancouver and committed to his two passions – art and theory. T.J.'s theoretical interests lie in subjectivity - specifically the implications of being a subject in day-to-day life. What does it mean to be subject to others, and how do we exist as subjects together? This focus tempers his sculptural practice, which concentrates on the viewer's experience in front of the art object and the implicit relationship that arises between the viewer and the object.
