Maria
Clara Bernal is a final year doctoral student at the University
of Essex, U.K. She is currently completing a thesis on the cultural
reception of Surrealism in Latin America, with particular emphasis
upon the work of Wifredo Lam and the Créolité movement.
She is the editor of the on-line journal ARARA art and architecture
in Latin America and is a curatorial advisor for the University
of Essex Collection of Latin American Art. She recently curated
the exhibition Transit at the University Gallery, which examined
the phenomenon of transculturation in contemporary art from Latin
America. She also organised the conference Latin American Art in
Transit that explored the issues of curating Latin American art
outside its own cultural and social context. On behalf of Visiting
Arts in London, maria recently coordinated a meeting of British
curators and Cuban artists for the 8th Havana Biennial.
Ms. Bernal was recommended to apexart's fellowship program by Juan
Fernando Herran, an artist and professor of Plastic Arts at Universidad
de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia. |
