Looking at film as a way to explore otherness, foreignness and exclusion, this session will evolve around 'the cinematic'. Join current apexart resident Line Halvorsen in conversation with New York based curator and art critic Niels Van Tomme.

WINTER GUEST is an appropriation of a Dutch TV show concept staged live in apexart’s exhibition space. Zomergasten (Summer Guests) gives its invited guest the opportunity to curate her/his favorite TV night. The selected fragments are shown and function as the starting point for a conversation between the host and the guest of the program.

Associate Professor Line Halvorsen is a curator and artist based in Oslo, Norway. She graduated from the Art Academy in Bergen, Norway, and Malmö, Sweden, in 2005. Previously she was doing Literary studies at the University of Tromsø and also a Film foundation school in the islands of Lofoten. Halvorsen has mainly been involved in the language between film and video art, but is more and more concerned about the role the artist. She is currently working on a project where she is looking at storytelling and the myths related to the artist. In addition she is teaching at the Academy in Oslo, KHiO and in Bergen, KHIB. Since 2001 Halvorsen has been involved in numerous projects as an curator, artist, and writer. Line Halvorsen was recommended to apexart by Will Bradley, a curator, writer, and musician based in Oslo, Norway.

Niels Van Tomme is a New York based curator, researcher and art critic who serves as the Director of Arts and Media at Provisions Library in Washington, DC. He has curated exhibitions such as Acts of Social Imagination at Nathan Cummings Foundation (New York) and Onthaasting — About Spare Time and Slower Worlds at American University Museum (Washington, DC), video screenings like Imaginary Belgium at Old Embassy (Tokyo) and Films on Art at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), and the series of sound art broadcasts Disturbance at sound@art (Baltimore). Van Tomme is an adjunct professor in Museum Curatorship at UMBC and a contributor to various journals, magazines and exhibition catalogues, including Afterimage, Art Papers, Foreign Policy in Focus and hART.
