Monotonic Surfaces
a video and sound art performance

Thursday, June 26: 7–8 pm
apexart, 291 Church St, NYC

Created during Karl Erickson’s Arctic Circle Residency aboard a Barquentine Tall Ship sailing in the international waters around the Arctic archipelago Svalbard, the video works of Monotonic Surfaces emphasize the ecstatic and transformative potential of the environment.

In this collaborative performance, Erickson will remix the footage he took inspired by sound art works by Steven Anderson and Stephanie Richards while they perform live.

Karl Erickson's artistic interests focus on motivational language, transcendental experiences, science-fiction, raves, repetition, and counter-cultures. His primary media are video, posters, collage, and latch-hook rugs and pillows. In 2013 he was an artist in residence at The Arctic Circle and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space Residency on Governor’s Island. He received his MFA from California Institute of the Arts and his BFA from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI.

A voice to the world of new and improvised music, trumpeter and composer Stephanie Richards is an innovative musician residing in the spaces between new music, performance art, and jazz. Stephanie’s theatrical tendencies often result in compositional collaborations of sight and movement, as reflected in her recently commissioned works Rotations for twelve choreographed musicians and carousel.

Steven L. Anderson works in a variety of media to explore the nature of power and the power of Nature. His current explorations into energy—the combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual forces that surround us—take the form of objects made in the studio, as well as engagement with various communities in his newly adopted city of Atlanta. His career as an artist has been a cycle of collaborative and individual production, including several projects with Karl Erickson and others. Anderson is a 2014-15 Walthall Fellow, and is in the Studio Artists Program at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. His work has been exhibited in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Miami, and Chicago.
