TALKS AND PERFORMANCES
Friday, May 8

Arabic Science Fiction: a Frontier of (Im)possibilities, a panel discussion moderated by curator Rachel Dedman with speakers Darine Hotait, Fadi Baqi, and Yazan al-Saadi at Ashkal Alwan. The discussion explored issues surrounding sci-fi’s critical potential, its experimentation with Arabic as a language, and the power of the genre's marginal status, within a regional context.
Tuesday, May 21: 8 pm
Wagons Libres, a talk-fiction from the future by Sandra Iche, at The Hangar, UMAM. As part of Iche’s research into the history of the Beirut-based Francophone magazine L’Orient Express, this performance included interviews and story-telling from 2030, to reflect on the Arab world and trouble understandings of time and history.
Tuesday, May 26: 7 pm

Collapsing Clouds of Gas and Dust, an artist’s talk by Vartan Avakian at the Arab Image Foundation. Avakian’s recent project has culminated in objects of an unusually small scale, each of which has been through an unexpectedly long history and an intricate making process. One, a new work, could be described as a self-portrait. The other is a monument to some other people. Both use residues.

Journey to the Moon (1959)
  May 24: 8 pm

The Counterfeit Millionaire (1968)

These films are interesting not only for their use of special effects and science fictive tropes, but also in the ways they reflect the intersection between Egyptian politics and film-making in the 1950s and 1960s. At Dawawine.
